When we were young (in church, at home and at school) I remember learning to can, learning to sew, and learning to cook. I remember we were taught the Bible, proper etiquette, how to smile, and how to speak. We were separated, the boys from the girls, at a certain age, each taught how to be an adult. We were taught not to show what only our husbands should see, and being a lady, quiet, with all our clothes on, was real beauty. We were taught to honor our men, not to disrespect them, and to make our home a refuge, not a war zone.
I look at the different forms of entertainment, listen to the conversations held between men and women, and watch the behaviors of children. I see parents more in touch with their cell phones and video games than they are with their own small children.
